Resorts owned by railroad companies may have gone the way of routine passenger railway travel but Kingsland’s Antlers Hotel keeps the restive atmosphere, and history, alive in the modern age. Opened by the Austin and NorthwesternTexas Railroad in 1901, the Antlers served as luxury get-a-way during a thriving passenger railroad era, taking advantage of a bucolic location along the banks of the converging Llano and Colorado Rivers. The Antlers provided a complete resort environment including hotel and individual cabins across its sprawling grounds, a stretch of Hill Country Region river country called Camp Pajama. Gas lamps lit the evening hours and both hotel rooms and cabins could telephone their room service orders to the hotel kitchen staff. Excursion trains ran from Austin to the fashionable resort every weekend, bringing vacationing guests. Today, with Lake Buchanan just upstream and Lake LBJ just offshore, the Antlers still makes for a great retreat destination, especially thanks to upgrades including all the modern conveniences. The grounds include the hotel, restored cabins, and cabooses, all offering overnight accommodations.
