Gold Dollar Newspaper Building

Hill Country Trail Region
1004 W 24th St Austin, TX 78705 (512) 220-0953

This two-story building was once home to Reverend Jacob Fontaine’s Gold Dollar newspaper, one of the first black newspapers west of the Mississippi and one of forty-eight commercial black newspapers published in Texas between 1870 and 1900. The building is all that remains of the African American community of Wheatville, which once encompassed the area from 24th to 26th Streets and from Rio Grande Street to Shoal Creek in Austin.
