Llano: Lantex Theater

HOUSE OF COMFORT ALL THE YEAR

Llano’s LanTex Theater opened in May of 1927 as a local theatrical venue complete with classic 1920s movie palace details – a Spanish Colonial Revival style design, spacious balcony, raised stage, plushy seating, and overhead rotating fans. The amenities were considered deluxe for the predominately rural Hill Country community, inspiring theater owners to promote the LanTex with the tagline “House of Comfort All the Year”. And, indeed, there was no better place to catch a movie or watch a live show like the popular local production featuring comic strip characters Buster Brown and his dog Tige. Today, the reprised mid-century modern LanTex (the first two iterations succumbed to fire) continues to show first run movies (all “talkies”, of course) and serve as home to the Llano Country Opry. Sponsored by the Heart of Texas Country Music Association, the Llano Country Opry presents musical concerts featuring country and western performers from around Texas and the country. The LanTex is also a contributing building to the Llano County Courthouse Historic District which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
