Johnson City: Johnson City Post Office 50th Anniversary Celebration

October 26, 2019 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Johnson City Post Office

The Johnson City Post Office has partnered with Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park to celebrate its 50th anniversary on Saturday October 26th from 2-4pm! At 2:30pm keynote speaker Kathryn O’Rourke will provide remarks on the historic significance of this building. O’Rourke is a historian of modern architecture and editor of the new book O’Neil Ford on Architecture. Arrive at 2pm to view an art display created by local high-school students and to grab a free refreshment, provided by the Friends of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.

Come learn about one of Texas’ most famous architects, who happens to be the designer of the Post Office – O’Neil Ford. Sited as “Texas’ godfather of modern architecture” he is renowned for landmark projects such as the San Antonio HemisFair’s Tower of the Americas.

So how did such an influential and famous architect come to design a post office in the small town of Johnson City, Texas? Well, it just so happens that Ford knew Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson. Come join us in celebrating this local treasure as “art is a nation’s most precious heritage” – President Lyndon B. Johnson.
