IN ALL ITS MAJESTY

Regardless of whatever current production might be occupying its stage, the historic Majestic Theatre in downtown San Antonio usually manages to steal the show, at least when the house lights are up. This dramatic 1920’s movie palace showcases some of the most elaborate architectural details in a city known for its architectural details. Designed in the Spanish Mediterranean style by architect John Eberson in 1929, the Majestic served San Antonio audiences for fifty years before undergoing a significant restoration courtesy of a partnership between the city, local non-profit Las Casas Foundation, and local philanthropies. The restoration included a retro-fit of technology that turned the National Historic Landmark into a modern performing arts venue. In return, San Antonians received both a beautifully preserved historic work of architecture and a state-of-the-art performance space. The Majestic maintains a steady schedule of performance events year-round including musical concerts, comedy shows, and stage productions featuring some of the world’s best known talent. Not bad for a little hometown movie theater.
